Although our decimal time converter is very accurate, knowing how to manually convert hours to the decimal format is still important. Here’s how to do it in just 3 steps.
Step 1
Divide the minutes by 60 to convert to a decimal.
For example, if you have a minute, 1/60 = 0.02
Step 2
Add the decimal minutes to the hours.
For example, if you have 7 hours, add 7 + 0.02 = 7.02
Step 3
The result we got in step 2 is the time in decimal format.
The number before the decimal point is the total hours, while the number after it is the decimalized minutes.
So an employee clocking in at 7:01 will be represented by 7.02 in military time.
Likewise, if you want to get back the time in hours: minutes format, then you can either refer to the table above or use these steps.
Step 1
Find out the hours.
For example, in 7.02, the number 7 represents 7 hours.
Step 2
Find out the decimal fraction.
Again, in 7.02, it’s 0.02.
Step 3
Multiply by 60 to convert the decimal time to minutes.
For example, 0.02 × 60 = 01 minute.
Step 4
Combine the two values we determined in the hours: minutes format.
In our example, it will be 7:01.
So an employee clocking in at 7.02 military time will be clocking in at 7:01 in normal time.
